I used to take pictures of fading flowers, especially lilies and bougainvillaea which I found extremely beautiful even in dying state. I am found of the drama and melancholia effect. A reflection on the impermanence and fragility of things.
New York photographer Jon Shireman likes to play with ‘frozen beauties’ too. For his Broken Flowers series, Shireman dipped the flowers in a liquid nitrogen bath for 30 minutes and smashed them into a hard surface while recording the destruction with a high speed camera.
