Vintage Palace on Costa Brava

Tuesday, 3 July 2012

Recently, my loving soon-to-be hubby took me a for a surprise getaway in a  gorgeous old Catalan palace on the Costa Brava. ♥
Hostal de la Gavina is the grandest address in the northeast of Spain, since it opened in the early 1980s, has attracted the rich and glamorous, including Ava Gardner, Orson Wells, Elizabeth Taylor and a host of celebrities from northern Europe.
It's on a peninsula jutting seaward from the centre of S'Agaro, placed on a small hill bathed by the Mediterranean and surrounded by beautiful gardens and gorgeous beaches.
Within a thick-walled Iberian villa built as the home of the Ansesa family (the owners of the hotel) in 1932 and decorated with family art and antiques.
The building itself is a masterpiece of architecture, which combines the modern line of greatest hotels with the warm atmosphere of the classical, traditional Catalan style.
The spacious rooms are sumptuous, with marble and wooden floors, hand-carved ebony and parquetry inlaid furniture, Murano crystal lamps, French style furniture, wool rugs from India, and walls covered with gold and silk.

There is nothing better than an old palace for romance!

Entrance, Ceramics from the Catalan Luis Bru

Our bedroom. Suite 327 with sea view.
French style with toile de Jouy.

Taverna del Mar. A seafood place to recommend in front of the hotel on the beach of S'Agaro. Gorgeous view, delicious food, and  excellent service. A gem and one of the most romantic restaurants I went to.
